The Pump House
The Workshop
In 1989, I realised a long held dream of starting my own upholstery business.
Mary Holland Upholstery was born in Black Torrington, Devon, and in 1997, when John Moulton moved into the village, he came to work for me. Gradually, our relationship grew from being purely professional to being something more, and 6 years later we got married and started Pump House Upholstery.
In 2000 we opened a retail shop in Hatherleigh, which was very successful. But we were simultaneously converting an old milking parlour in Black Torrington, called The Pump House, into a place to work and live. And in 2005 we closed the shop, in order to concentrate more of our time and energy on this vital project.
John and I are now the proud owners of a lovely home, a well stocked garden, and a purpose built workshop in this tranquil corner of rural North Devon. Together with a thriving business which keeps both of us in full time employment and gives regular work to other skilled local craftspeople.
